Soil and dirt are not the same. Dirt is a mixture of sand, clay, and silt. It contains no beneficial nutrients or microbes—nothing can grow from dirt. Soil is very much alive. It’s a biodiverse system made of minerals, water, air, organic matter, and living organisms.
While soil and dirt appear the same, one is devoid of life and any real substance and the other is a regenerative system for growth.
There’s a lot of dirt out there being sold as soil.
Soil can also die. It requires care and maintenance to ensure it can support future growth. Poor, careless practices can turn soil into dirt. Make sure you nurture it.
